Police officers in Edenton are getting additional training behind the wheel after officials say they've been involved in 13 crashes over the last seven months.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reports that Town Manager Anne-Marie Knighton said nine of the 13 crashes were preventable and cost the town $30,000 in patrol car damage. Knighton said she won't accept the notion that the wrecks amount to a run of bad luck.

One officer who caused two crashes has been suspended two days without pay. Two weeks ago, Police Chief Jay Fortenbery's cruiser rear ended a car.

Knighton said after the town met with insurance and safety officials from the North Carolina League of Municipalities, it was determined officers will receive additional driver training and could be disciplined for preventable crashes.
