ECU Simplifies Alert System After Umbrella Lockdown

East Carolina University has made changes to its alert system after many students weren't advised of a lockdown two weeks ago.

During November 16th's umbrella lockdown, students who opted to receive the alerts as cell phone text messages were not included. That accounted for roughly 45% of the students at the university.

The university was locked down for nearly three hours when multiple people reported seeing a man with what they thought was an assault rifle walking toward campus. The gun turned out to be an umbrella.

ECU says operators can now send out alerts to multiple subscribers by checking just one box.

Spokeswoman Mary Schulken says now students, faculty and staff, along with community partners will get the alerts. Before they had to check individual boxes and there were times when the university wanted to sent alerts just to students. But Schulken says after November 16th they decided to simplify the system.
