ECU Lockdown Prompts 911 "Sightings" Calls

After several recent lockdowns at college campuses in our state- people took Wednesday's lockdown at East Carolina University very seriously. Many people called 911 trying to help police.

This was the fourth lockdown east of Charlotte recently. Wake Tech, Campbell University, UNC Wilmington, and then Wednesday at ECU in Greenville.

There were dozens of calls to 911 about the lockdown and possible sightings of the gunman- which we now know was a man with an umbrella and no gun. One father of an ECU student called trying to help lead police to the alleged gunman.

Caller:"Do you know that the man with the gun is on the second floor of the (undecipherable) building right now? My daughter is in the closet on the second floor."

911 dispatcher: 'You're saying he's on the second floor?"

Caller: "He's on the second floor right now."

The lockdown was called off before1:00 p.m. Monday.

The emergency management center in Pitt County says the additional calls from this false alarm were not enough to tie up the lines for any other emergencies in the county.
