ECU Suspends Football Player After Drug Arrest

East Carolina University has suspended a football player arrested last night for drugs.

Terry Williams, who is a sophomore nose tackle, was charged last night by Simpson police with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. He remains in the Pitt County jail on a $2,500 bond.

Head coach Ruffin McNeill suspended Williams indefinitely from all team activities. It came hours after McNeill and other ECU athletics officials were made aware of the arrest.

"I have suspended Terry as a result of a poor decision and conduct that is certainly not in line with the standards we have in place at East Carolina," McNeill said. "Representing this university and playing in our program is a privilege and everyone will be held accountable to earn that right. Naturally, I'm disappointed and frustrated by this development, but we will continue to mentor and guide our players to the best of our ability, although it isn't always an exact process."

Simpson police chief John Waters says around 10:00 p.m. he noticed a vehicle's tag light out near Simpson Street and McDonald Street. He says the vehicle was all over the road, weaving in traffic.

The chief says he stopped the vehicle on Black Jack Simpson Road and detected a strong smell of marijuana. According to Waters, Williams said he had been smoking, but that he didn't have any more left. After asking if he could search the vehicle, Waters found a zip bag with around 13 grams of marijuana inside.

Williams was also cited for improper equipment and having no operator's license.

His team bio says the 20-year-old Williams played a valuable role as the Pirates' reserve nose tackle, and took part in 11 games last season.

Several other ECU athletes on the football and basketball teams have faced arrests in separate cases this year.
