The man shot by a state trooper Monday morning in Cherokee County has been identified as a High Point man.

The Highway Patrol says Dustin Canter was shot during a physical confrontation with Trooper H.S. Robertson. The trooper had responded to a call of a suspicious person in a parked vehicle on the shoulder of U.S. 64 in Cherokee County around 7:55 a.m. Monday.

The 25-year-old Canter remains at a Chattanooga, Tennessee hospital. The Highway Patrol says the trooper was also injured.

Warrants against Canter for assault on a law enforcement officer inflicting serious injury have been filed in the case.

Trooper Robertson, a 12-year veteran of the Highway Patrol, has been placed on administrative duty pending a SBI investigation into the shooting.
