Pharmacy robberies are up across the state, and that's no different in the east. In 2 counties alone in our area the prescription drug problem has law enforcement changing up their strategy- switching from focusing on street drugs like marijuana and cocaine to prescription drug abuse now.

Now local pharmacists say they're staying on high alert after drug store break-ins in Onslow and Jones counties in the past few months.

In November, deputies arrested 27-year-old Michael Byrd for ripping off the CVS in Snead's Ferry for 600 pills. It was just last Wednesday, deputies surrounded Allen Drugs in Pollocksville. Investigators say 20 year old Ryan Mullins was the brazen, would- be robber. Deputies caught up to him within hours. Regardless of the arrests, Sheriff Danny Heath says one thing hindering law enforcement in this part of the drug arena is having an unstable suspect.

"I really couldn't answer what's going on in their head. I don't think a lot's going on in their head. I think these pills may have messed up any kind of common sense they've had," Jones County Sheriff Danny Heath.
