DEPUTIES: Victim Recognizes Gunman Behind Mask

Deputies say the victim in an attempted robbery recognized the man behind the mask, and told him to stop playing around.

Marcial Govea of Greenville is charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, first degree burglary and discharging a weapon on occupied property.

Pitt County deputies say Perry Wainwright of Bess Farm Road responded to a knock at the door at around 10:30 p.m. last Wednesday. An armed man was standing there, wearing a ski mask and demanding money.

The victim told deputies he recognized the gunman as an acquaintance and told him to stop playing around. The gunman then fired a shot into the floor in front of Wainwright, and grabbed his wallet. It turns out the victim didn't have any money in the wallet and the gunman returned it to the victim.

The 24-year-old Govea was jailed on a $50,000 bond.
