DEPUTIES: Sex Offender At Children's Sports Event

A registered sex offender is accused of being at an athletic event where children play recreational sports.

David Sides, Sr. of Chocowinity is charged with one count of sex offender on child premises. He turned himself in to a magistrate and was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.

Beaufort County deputies say back in June 16th they got a report the 41-year-old Sides was at the athletic event in Belhaven.

Sides was convicted in Pitt County back in 1999 for two counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor.

at the time of the crime he was 29 years old, how old were his 'victims'? not saying its right, but if the victim was 16, a female--29 is old for 16 but not totally unacceptable. i know married people that far apart in age. is he a consistent danger to children? male or female? seems like an inflammatory story to me!

The article fails to relate that Mr. Sides was attending a game to watch his son play. Numerous law enforcement that knew him and his status were present. The sex offender laws need to be revamped to separate the different crimes they cover. Not every sex offence is committed on just children. If WITN is going to report the news they should investigate the WHOLE story not just the parts they want to pull in veiwers. And don't even get me going on the jailbird. What happened to innocent until proven guilty. Just saying...GET THE WHOLE STORY.

nope! he cant go to parks or anywhere there may be kids. Also the incident happened at home while a relative was living there. He cannot attend his grandkids activities for school or the like and the people involved were both adults. I dont get it.

You are so wrong. You only know what you assume. Someone got mad cause they didnt get their way. If you are a male be very very careful cause it can happen to you too. If you are a female fine other ways to express your attitude what you say can never be taken back and you ruin an innocent mans life forever!!!

I think that in the age of information things have gone to far. The sex offender listing is good in some ways, people do have a right to know if there is a pedophile living next to their kids. The bad part is that you don't know if the person on the list is there for messing with kids, violent crime, or just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The jailbird is also a joke. If they want to publish pictures, etc, then why not wait until after the people have been found guilty?

Someone got drunk. A female relative (over 21) was lying on the floor, she asked the relative to lay with her and watch TV. He looked at her privates...Sex offender! later is found out she set him up. Too late the judge asked if he looked and he said yes and there you go...served jail time, on list for 10 years (hopefully not longer), Now he is unable to have a facebook page, find a job, be around children, have a place to go if there is a natural disaster and is evacuated, he cannot attend his grandkids ball games or school functions and best part of all, JAILBIRD mag has his pic in there every couple weeks. PROBLEM is that the JAILBIRD mag states that the people in the magazine were arrested the past week...This man I am referring to was arrested in 2008. And has kept his nose clean for the past 3 yrs. He cannot go near schools, work were there are playground for kids or go to the walkin movies, or talk a walk in the park, So the people that have lives with these people, their lives are effected too. And yes everyones says they didnt do it, but we know they sometimes do, but peoples come on enough is enough!!! It is public accessiable for people who want to check out sex offenders. But a lot of these guys are keeping their nose clean, reporting in when they should. Are home acting like they ought to when the Sheriff's dept decides to chek them out, and yet the JAILBIRD keeps publishing them in their mag. I think its wrong and if they state that these people were arrested this week. I have written to JAILBIRD on line and my commeents were posted, but I never got a reply form Jailbird itself.

Tick of your girl friend, you may end up as a sex offender. Date a crack head, you may end up as a sex offender. Have a girl lie to you about her age,you may end up as a sex offender. Have a girl ask you for money and don't give it to her, you may end up as a sex offender. Spilt up with yoour wife, you may end up as a sex offender. The list grows.

I don't know what this man did. I do know that your crime could be with anyone over 18 years of age and you are still a sex offender. Every body is still going to think you were with a child.

Please tell me how his 4 counts of indecent liberties with a child had nothing to do with a child???? A child is considered under 16 in NC. 29 years old is entirely too old to be doing anything with a child that is not his own
