Greenville's police chief admits crime in the city increased in December, something he plans to fix.

Chief Hassan Aden met with reporters Friday, releasing crime statistics for last month that reflects the increase.

Comparing December with the year before, there were 26 aggravated assaults in the city, compared with 16 in 2012. Robberies showed a similar spike, 25 for December 2013, compared to 19 for the same month a year before.

There were three attempted armed robberies in December, while just one in December 2012. Police say both months saw just one homicide.

Aden says he has an aggressive new plan for action that is being made available to all citizens. That plan is to decrease crime 3% by end of this year.

The chief says they will reassign officers to areas known as crime hot spots. He said for commercial crimes, heavily armed officers may be alongside store clerks.

A printed copy of the report is available at the Greenville Police Department. But, WITN has made it easy for you to get the report by just clicking the link at the top of the story.

The new year in Greenville has started out with two shootings and a robbery and that has city officials concerned about the ongoing crime.

City council members Rose Glover and Marion Blackburn say they're both concerned about crime and say the police department is doing well responding to what seems to be an uptick in crime.

Blackburn says, "How do we respond to this, we need to send the message if criminals are going to get more active, we are too."

Glover says, "All of the things that have been happening with the shootings, there have been arrests, so I think the way he's deployed the police officers and running the police department that is a great way to do it."

Greenville Police Chief Hassan Aden will release statistics Friday about crime trends over the past couple of years.

We'll talk with him one on one and hear what he has to say about tackling crime in 2014.
