Courts Feel The Impact Of Budget Cuts

A $38 million dollar reduction from the state's judicial system budget is having an impact on local court systems.

In Beaufort County for example, the D.A.covers five counties. His Washington office is closed to the public on Wednesdays so he can handle cases in other counties, like Martin County. The doors to the D.A's office there are shut Tuesdays, Thursdays and for half days on Fridays. While the clerk's office is open five days a weeks, they have a very limited number of staff.

Tonya Leggett, Martin County Clerk of Court says the situation will only get worse because the magistrate's offices in Beaufort & Martin will be down a person next December.
