Carolina Beach Chief's Wife Charged With Assaulting Cop

The wife of Carolina Beach's retiring police chief has been charged with assaulting a police officer.

Fifty-five-year-old Darlene Younginer of Wilmington turned herself in earlier on charges of communicating threats and assault on a government official.

The director of Carolina Beach's ocean rescue program accused Younginer of threatening the officer and hitting her. Alicia Lachance obtained a warrant Saturday against Younginer, accusing her of confronting the officer Nov. 8.

The town's ocean rescue program is operated by the police department.

Police Chief William Younginer announced his retirement earlier this month. Lachance announced her resignation the same day.

Town officials say they investigated Darlene Younginer's claim of an affair between her husband and Lachance but found no evidence of an affair.

It was not clear if Younginer has a lawyer.
