The Highway Patrol says a teen driver was driving while impaired, crashed and fled the scene of the accident just before midnight Sunday, on Highway 33 near the Beaufort/Pitt County line.

Trooper Howard says 17-year-old Maleek Williams of Grimesland was traveling east on Highway 33 when he ran off the road, hit a road sign, crashed into a ditch and knocked down a light pole.

Trooper Howard says Williams called his family from the scene of the accident, but then left. When family members arrived on scene, troopers said they needed to go get Williams.

The teen was brought back to the scene and has been charged with DWI, failure to remain at the scene of an accident and failure to maintain lane control.
