(WXII) After more than two decades without answers, an arrest has been made in the 23-year-old kidnapping and murder of a 7-year-old North Carolina girl.
Donald Ferguson of Greensboro made his first appearance at the Guilford County Courthouse Monday afternoon.
He was arrested last Tuesday for allegedly kidnapping Shalonda Poole in 1990.
Her body was found in some woods behind an elementary school.
Investigators say she was sexually assaulted and strangled.
Fifty-two-year-old Ferguson was also charged with first-degree murder and first- degree sex offense.
Police say forensic evidence links Ferguson to the death of the little girl.
The judge appointed Ferguson with a public defender and a capital defender.
His next court date is February 27th and there is no bond allowed.
If he is found guilty he could face the death penalty.
