Former Perdue Campaign Staffers, Donor Indicted

Two former staffers for Governor Beverly Perdue's election campaign and a donor have been indicted on criminal charges by a Wake County grand jury.

The indictments stem from unreported campaign flights on private planes.

Trawick "Buzzy" Stubbs and Julia Sitton were both indicted on charges of false reports and obstruction of justice, while Peter Reichard was indicted for obstruction of justice.

Stubbs is a New Bern attorney, while Reichard was finance director for the election campaign. Sitton had been director of the governor's Western Office.

The indictments say Stubbs provided $28,000 in flights for the campaign which was not reported to the state Board of Elections.
Election laws limit giving more than $4,000 to a candidate in any election cycle

Sitton is accused of allowing campaign reports to be filed that did not reveal part of her campaign salary was paid by donors.

The indictment against Reichard says he solicited a campaign contribution of $32,000 from a donor who had already contributed the maximum permitted by law. Court documents say that money went to Sitton as part of her pay.

The charges come more than a year after Wake County prosecutor Colon Willoughby said he would investigate payments of air travel for the campaign following a State Board of Elections probe of Perdue's campaign committee. The State Board of Elections fined her committee $30,000.

Perdue is seeking re-election in 2012.

In a statement issued this afternoon, the governor said her committee has cooperated fully with the investigation. "At the District Attorney’s request, while those matters are pending, I will not comment on the specific charges or any aspect of the investigation," said Perdue. "I will, however, reiterate what I made clear at the beginning of the investigation, and what the investigation has confirmed: as a citizen, a candidate for public office, and an elected official, I have strived to follow the rules and laws."

Sure! She had no knowledge of this. Didn't anyone remember in the last election when she was Lt Governor, her "appointee" that ran the state fair taking bribes from the vendors or amusement people that supplied the state fair? She had nothing to do with that either, or the campaign flights she had to pay for. When are the people of this state gonna stop voting for crooks? She obviously fell out of the same Hunt/Easley tree.

How can you enforce laws when everyone is breaking the law?

Yet another example for the need to reform how we finance campaigns for elected office!! It doesn't make ANY difference the party, they are BOTH for sale!! BOTH partys will collect money 2-3 yrs BEFORE running for office!! The DC critters spend 3 days out of EVERY week raising money!! NOT working for you and me, but raising money for THEM!!! 90 billion dollars a yr is spent paying back donors!! The average net worth of folks in congress is over $891,000!! 2/3 have a net worth of a million!! Does that look like you? NOTHING will change until we change the election laws!! PERIOD. You can point fingers all you want, but NEITHER party represents constituents, unless they're a lobbyist!!! For over 30 yrs the middle class has shrunk and/or stagnated, that's under BOTH partys at one time or the other!! Let's take our country back from the special interests and return representation the the people!!!!!

It really doesn't matter if she had knowledge of this or not, if she did (most likely) she broke the law, if she didn't it shows a total lack of leadership. Either way it's bye-bye Bev.

No sweat for our illustrious governor. Obama and Holder will protect her as a reward for her unflinching support of Obama's socialist programs.

To Concerned and Jimbo. Mike Easley has had to pay a price. He was found quilty of a felony and has had to make restitution so no he did not escape untouched. He sufferd for months thru indictments, then court and finally quilty with a large amount of money to pay per court order. I fell he was an excellent governor and worked hard for our economy long before the bottom fell out. Now Perdue, she is a different story. She is preoccupied with Highway Patrol problems so often she has time for little else,

The honorable thing to do would be to "vacate" her win in 2008. Not likely to happen from Gov. Dumb Dimples.
