Pitt County Deputy Resigns; Charged In Bar Assault

A Pitt County deputy sheriff, suspended last month after a bar fight, has resigned his position and has now been charged.

Court documents confirm that Deputy Robert Brooks was charged with misdemeanor simple assault for the Valentine's Day fight involving another deputy and a former state trooper.

Brooks and Deputy Joe Reason were suspended several days after the fight which happened at A.J. McMurphy's Irish Pub in Greenville.

Police investigated the assault and told Daniel Vaughan of Winterville that he could pursue charges if he wished.

A Sheriff's Office spokeswoman says Brooks has resigned, while the other deputy remains on suspension.

The owner of A.J. McMurphy's says it started inside, and those involved were quickly taken out by pub employees and police were called.

The warrant, which was written out by Vaughan, says Brooks assaulted him after Vaughan claimed the two deputies were trying to get better acquainted with a woman that he knew. The former trooper says Brooks grabbed him from behind the neck, pulled him and head-butted him.

The warrant says bar staff broke up the fight and kicked Brooks out. It continued to say that bar staff told Vaughan that Brooks was trying to get back in the business to apologize, but he had a gun on him. Vaughan says that's when he called police.

Brooks was released on a $1,000 unsecured bond and has an April 12th court date.

The deputy had been with the Sheriff's Office since December 2011.
