WARRANTS: Chief Jailer Took $1,788 From Inmate Fund


There is new information about the embezzlement arrest of a chief jailer for one Eastern Carolina county.

Eric Johnson was arrested Thursday after a State Bureau of Investigation probe into missing money in the jail inmate account at the Greene County jail.

Sheriff Lemmie Smith says he was alerted to financial discrepancies and he notified the SBI.

Court documents say the 27-year-old LaGrange man is accused of taking $1788 from the account between April 1st and April 30th.

Johnson was fired by the Sheriff's Office. He was given a $15,000 bond and his next court date is June 14th.

Sheriff Smith said he was alerted to financial discrepancies in the Greene County Inmate Bank Account.

The Sheriff said he reviewed the account to find funds were missing, then reported it to the State Bureau of Investigation.

Smith said after the SBI's investigation, chief jailer Eric Johnson was terminated from the Greene County Sheriff's Office.

Johnson has now been charged with embezzlement by the SBI.
