POLICE: Ayden Mini-Mart Scuffle Ends In Gunfire, Arrests

Police in Ayden said two known gang members are in jail after a fight at a convenience store Monday night.

Police Chief Barry Stanley said around 8:40 p.m., an officer was doing foot patrol on Lee Street where there have been two shootings with property damage in the last month.

Police heard a scuffle from the U.S. Mini-Mart on Lee Street, shattering glass, and then gunfire.

Chief Stanley said two men jumped another man while inside the mini-mart and threw the victim through the glass door, shattering it.

Investigators said one of the men fired a gun at the victim, but missed him. The two took off running one direction, the victim went another way.

After looking at surveillance video, police said they identified both men immediately as Melvin Forbes and Omar Langley.

Police said by midnight, they tracked down the 32-year-old Forbes of Greenville and charged him with attempted first degree murder and simple assault.

Stanley said they had information that Langley was staying at a Winterville home. Police arrived there to find the him, his car, and drugs along with paraphernalia.

Both men are in the Pitt County Detention Center. Langley is held on a $785,000 bond including charges from Ayden and Winterville police.

Forbes' bond was set at $755,000.

Stanley said the victim only received injuries from the assault, including a cut hand.

A Pitt County man is expected to make his first court appearance this morning on first-degree murder charges.

Jail officials say 32-year-old Melvin Forbes of Greenville was arrested by Ayden police around 1:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. Forbes is charged with attempted first-degree murder and simple assault. He's being held behind bars under a $755,000 bond.
