Officer Assaulted During Arrest

A police officer is okay after being assaulted during an arrest early this morning.

Morehead City police say Sgt. Neal Nelson found a pickup truck that was possibly involved in a convenience store break-in.

While trying to handcuff the driver, police say the suspect tried to grab the officer's handgun. He was unsuccessful, but police say he did manage to get the officer's collapsible baton, extend it and attempt to strike the officer. Sgt. Nelson ended up striking the man and eventually used pepper spray to subdue him.

Dean Newman of Wilmington is charged with assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon, breaking and entering, larceny, possession of stolen goods, resist obstruct and delay, and damage to personal property. His bond is set at $50,000.

Three other people in the truck have been charged in connection with the break-in at the Jim Dandy on Friendship Road. Donnie Hinson, Tiffany Morman & Rhonda White have been charged with breaking and entering, larceny, possession of stolen goods, and damage to personal property.
