Pastor: Fayetteville Man Agreed To Help, Then Killed Family

A pastor says a North Carolina real estate developer was showing signs of mental illness and agreed to get treatment several hours before his killed his wife, two teenage children and himself.

Multiple media outlets reported the Rev. John Cook spoke at a memorial service for the family on Friday at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church in Fayetteville, where the family worshipped.

Cook says William Maxwell Jr. admitted to irrational thoughts and was monitoring phone calls out of fear someone was trying to track him.

The pastor told about 1,000 people attending the service he was one of a number of friends and family at the Maxwell home on Monday encouraging William Maxwell to seek help.

Cook said Maxwell agreed, but hours later killed his family.
