Ex-Con Charged In 4 Fatal Shootings In 'Mayberry'

Police say a soured love affair may have led to a shooting that left four men dead in the town that inspired the idyllic community of Mayberry on the 1960s TV series "The Andy Griffith Show."

Twenty-nine-year-old Marcos Chavez Gonzalez was charged Monday with four counts of murder in the slayings a day earlier in Mount Airy, about 100 miles north of Charlotte.

The four were shot with a high-powered assault rifle.

Police do not believe the shootings were random. Mount Airy Police Chief Dale Watson says officers are investigating motives including a contract killing or a love affair gone bad.

State prison records show Gonzalez was released from prison after serving more than two years on a 2002 conviction for kidnapping and a probation violation.

To Bob - If they had to describe it the way you did, it would take up an entire page honey. It was powerful enough to take out 4 people. They did not mention the kind of beef that is being recalled. NOW THATS A GOOD QUESTION?!

What is a high powered assault rifle? Is that a reference to a rifle that shoots one time when you pull the trigger once? Is that a rifle that happens to be black in color? Is High powered referring to the caliber of the bullet ie. 30 caliber, 7mm, 30-06 like hunters use to kill deer? Did they recover the rifle?-is that how they know to call it a high power assault rifle? Don't get me wrong I hate that people were killed, but I get so tired of the loose term of assault rifle...If they continue to demonize a rifle that looks differnt but functions like a hunting rifle, then next they will ban your hunting rifle, then your shotgun etc.
