The largest single strike at the Mexican drug cartel is how Attorney General Eric Holder describes a nationwide raid the past two days, including here in eastern Carolina.
The SBI Special Response Team and federal agents moved in Wednesday near Tarboro on Highway 33 North in Edgecombe County.
One person was arrested in Edgecombe County, 300 people in all nationwide.
Holder says the arrests were aimed at the U.S. operations of the La Familia cartel, which is the newest and most violent of Mexico's five drug cartels. One North Carolina DEA agent says the cartels have a strong reach into eastern Carolina.
More than 3,000 federal agents and police officers made the arrests in more than a dozen states.
The DEA says over the past year they've seized 167 kilos of cocaine, 15 pounds of meth and more than 1.7 million dollars.
