Son Charged With Neglect: Disabled Mom Weighed 70 Pounds, Died Of Burns

A western Pennsylvania man has been charged with neglecting his disabled mother who weighed just 70 pounds when she died of burns caused when her cigarette caught her oxygen supply on fire.

Police say 53-year-old Rosemary McCurdy died Dec. 26 after suffering facial burns from a "flash fire." The woman had multiple sclerosis and had been bedridden for five years when she was burned Dec. 21.

Police say 22-year-old Victor McCurdy didn't take her to the hospital until five days after she was burned. He was arraigned Thursday on charges of involuntary manslaughter and neglect of care to a dependent person.

Police say McCurdy told them his mother didn't like hospitals, but he finally called an ambulance the day she died. He has pleaded not guilty.

There is no excuse for the son to not get medical attention for his mother immediately after she was burned. However, I am sure that he was afraid and his mom may have refused. I am left to wonder just why this twenty-two year old man was caring for his mother to begin with. Too often, children are left to care for a parent who has some sort of debilitating disease while other relatives look away. The mother became bedridden when the boy was STILL a minor. It seems that too much was placed on his shoulders when he was way too young. As for his mom's cigarettes, he was probably trying to make her happy. You would be surprised at just how many people do not know just how dangerous cigarette smoking while oxygen is in use is. It seems to me that this is a sad case that fell through the cracks. Anyone who has taken care of a sick family member at home knows that this young "schmuck" did not have an easy life. Yes, huge mistakes were made but I also see him as a victim. God bless.

Let this be another lesson. Raise your children to love and respect you. That way there might be some hope of not raising an uncaring idiot that might end up caring (or not) for you one day. She should have gone to a nursing home if that SCHMUCK of a child was her only choice.
