Football Coach Accused Of Assaulting Player

A recreational league football coach has been arrested, accused of assaulting one of his players.

Dudley Whitley III, a coach for a recreational football league in Rocky Mount, has been charged with simple assault.

Police say the 49-year-old coach allegedly hit the 12-year-old victim on the lower back with his hand as a means of discipline during practice. It happened August 13th at Tom Stith Park.

Police say they were notified by the city Parks and Recreation Department later in that week. A criminal summons was obtained by the victim's mother after appearing before a magistrate.

Whitley, who is a a partner in a Rocky Mount law firm, has an October 26th court date.

Since WITN reported on Dee Whitley's arrest in September, I certainly hope they will report on his acquittal today.

Instead of complaining over Whitley's actions, we should all be thankful that he is volunteering his time to work with kids. Someone just blew it up so hopefully they will be able to make a profit from it. They are not worried over the child, just how much they can get from complaining. hopefully

Being hit voluntarily in football and the coach hitting some1 no matter how hard out of disciplinary actions are two totally different things. I grew up a prominent student athlete throughout grade school and in college and am 24 now, but I would've flipped out if a coach were to hit me no matter how hard for disciplinary reasons. Its a thin line, but good coaches know how to manage it.

Just one more reason to get out of this hell hole. I see and read it every day in the local paper. This little Durham is a lost city. Over taxed and over run with crime, and this incident is a problem. Get real!!!!!

Andre Knight is the problem with Rocky Mount. His insistence on bringing race to the forefront of every problem in the city perpetuates the problems that keep Rocky Mount from advancing. Thirty years ago, Rocky Mount was supposed to be a bigger/better place than Greenville and Wilson. Now, because of people like Andre Knight, Rocky Mount has been stuck in the past while other places in eastern NC advance. As long as Andre Knight (or other people with similar values) remains influential, Rocky Mount will continue to deteriorate.

I know Dee Whitley well. This is the most absurd accusation!. Dee would never "assault" a child. Not in his nature. I truly believe this is a case of someone trying to get a free ride from a decent, hard-working man. And then we have one of our great city councilmen leading her right along. The real CRIME here is what you are doing to Dee. Haven't you already punished him enough by trying to ruin his reputation in the media and in the community? Give me a break. Move on.
