The search in a rural part of Edgecombe County entered its second day Thursday with lawmen not saying much about the investigation.
The search began Wednesday morning, not far from where the bodies of missing women have been found.
More than a dozen officers, from Edgecombe and Johnston counties, have been searching the rural area off Highway 33, east of Whitakers.
Edgecombe County Sheriff James Knight said in a news release that "we believe a search of this area was necessary to determine if any other victims are in this area."
Knight said at this time no new victims have been found and that there is no time limit on how long the search will last.
The search comes one week after Antwan Pittman was arrested for the murder of Tahara Nicholson, whose body was found back in March in the same area as Wednesday's search.
Five women from Rocky Mount have been found dead in a 10-mile area of rural Edgecombe County in the past four years. Nicholson, 28, Jarniece Hargrove, 31, Ernestine Battle, 50, Jackie Nikelia Thorpe, 35, and Melody Wiggins, 29 – were all black women.
Police are still searching for three other missing women who disappeared and whose families have not heard from them in months.
