A 31-year-old convicted sex offender accused of murdering one of six eastern North Carolina women killed over the past four years has made his first court appearance.
Antwan Maurice Pittman stood before an Edgecombe County judge Wednesday where he was charged with first-degree murder for the death of 29-year-old Taraha Nicholson, who was found strangled along a rural stretch of road outside Rocky Mount in March.
Nicholson's murder is one of six similar cases being investigated by a task force that includes the Edgecombe County sheriff;s office, the State Bureau of Investigation and the FBI.
Messages left for Pittman's two court-appointed attorneys were not returned.
Authorities continue to search for three women still missing.
