Jail Break In Edgecombe County

The Edgecombe County Sheriff says six juvenile suspects overpowered the guards at the detention center annex on St. Andrews Street in Tarboro late Sunday night.

The sheriff says they got the call of the jail break at 11:30 PM. Five of the suspects were captured within an hour, the sheriff says, and the sixth and final suspect was caught this morning.

Sheriff James Knight says the officers had minor injuries as a result of the escape. We'll keep you posted on any more details.

This is not the first time young inmates have broken out of the Edgecombe County Detention Center Annex. In April of this year, officials reported a 17-year-old overpowered the guards to escape the annex. He was caught.

Do you feel safe in Edgecombe County? Serial killer 3 escapes this year. A new sheriff is in order.

Time to tighten security and allow guards to use pepper and batons. These punks should get locked up in an adult facility now.

I live within eyeshot of the Edgecombe County detention center from which these people escaped. I spent the night listening to police cars speeding past my house between 11:30 and 12:30. What I SHOULD have been hearing was my phone ringing. Whatever happened to the red alert phone notifications we're supposed to get when these kinds of events happen? We didn't receive a red alert call until AFTER the suspects were apprehended. I am NOT a happy resident of Tarboro right now! If public safety is concern number 1 when there's a jailbreak, there should be an efficient and functioning system for letting residents know that there is a situation. The events that took place last night - the escape itself and the subsequent lack of warning to citizens - are unacceptable!

How about putting a few armed guards outside, and if they get past the ones inside shoot to kill.

This is getting really old! I think the Sheriff needs to do SOMETHING about the inept jailers on his staff. This is getting to be ridiculous. Maybe there shouldn't be all women jailers at the annex jail, anyone thought of that? Of course they'll be overpowered easily.

This set of six just showed what they can/will do at an older age. I'm glad they were all caught right away. And I hope the guards will be okay. Seems like this has happened before at the same facility.
