Kinston Police say a woman allowed two men to come inside her house, after they said they needed to install some wooden braces in her attic. The woman said the men came in with lumber, she heard some banging noises, and then they told her the bill was several thousand dollars. Police say the senior citizen wrote the men a check, and they quickly left.
A relative later convinced the woman to stop the payment on the check and call the police.
Police say, make sure you ask for identification when a person comes to your home unsolicited. Also, a reputable business will not pressure you into making quick decisions.
Police say, in this instance, the fact the woman recently had work done to her home could have made the scammer's story more believable.
