Craven County Elderly Couple Recalls Attack In Own Home

An elderly Craven County couple say they will no longer be good Samaritans, this after they were attacked in their own home Monday.

Jack Taylor is back home after being treated at the hospital for injuries in Monday's robbery.

Deputies say the couple let a man inside their Streets Ferry Road home to use the phone. The couple, who are both 73-years-old, said the man came back after Mary Lou Taylor had left.

Jack Taylor was pistol-whipped and when his wife came home they were both tied up.

"We can't be a good Samaritan in our own home anymore because next time we're going to be murdered," Mary Lou Taylor told WITN News.

The man robbed the couple, and stole their car. It was found on Cow Pen Landing Road. Deputies continue to search for two suspects in the robbery and assault.

As for Jack Taylor, he's now sitting beside his door with a gun. "We've helped so many people that have had accidents on this road, but the next time someone comes to the door bleeding to death we're going to have to turn them away," Mary Lou Taylor said.

That's just pitiful someone would do that to old people. I particularly hate crimes against children and old people! Mr. Humberstone they get their misinformation from limbaugh, beck, hannity and o'reilly. FOX-Unfair and Unbalanced for sure.

Anyone that comes knocking on my door, for any reason, will have a Colt M1911A1 .45 jammed in his face through the door crack, the entire time he's standing on my property. If he/she does not leave immediately, I will sic my Dobermans on them, of which I have 3. If they try to push their way into my house after that, or hurt one of my dogs (doubtful) I will open fire and will not stop until the threat has been eliminated. If they bring their friends or a vehicle on my property, I will switch to the AR-15 and 12 gauge Mossberg pump shotgun. I will not be a victim, and if some fool like this wants to turn my yard into a battlefield, I'm ready. Oh, and to some of you people.. Obama is not going to take anyone's guns. You should have been more concerned with Bush taking them (read the Patriot Act) than Obama. I have no idea where you're getting that information.

I am so sorry this happended to a couple trying to help others. About a year ago we put in a security system linked to law enforcement, but this does not stop something of this nature happening. From now on, we will NOT open a door, but through the door will let them know to go back to their car and we will call the Sheriff to help them. If they are legitimate, no problem and if they are crooks they will leave immediately. It is a shame we can't help people, but in today's society, we can't.

These were two very nice senior citizens who wanted to help someone in need. It is a shame that that "someone in need" turned out to be a criminal. It is an evil person who assaults another person in this way.Put that criminal in prison for a long time so he can't hurt anyone else - that's the answer. The answer is not guns - guns bring in more violence. Unfortunately, in this society one cannot answer the door without knowing who it is first.

Helper Jack: Okay, next time some guy comes knockin on your door asking to use the phone, let him in like the good semaritan you are. And when he ends up beating your children and raping your wife and shooting you in the face, but you somehow survive it all...see if you help the next person asking to use the phone.

I would have to say that helper jack is a coward and he should be ashamed of himself for talking the way he has about this elderly couple. I have always been a good samaritan stop to help someone in need, give someone a ride, give someone gas for there car at 2:00 in the morning one night but the way things have become you have got to be careful doing anything to help others. I would have to agree with the couple that I would not let anyone in my house anymore if they need help I will call 911 from inside. My thoughts and prayers go out to this couple.
