Bond For Duke Grad Student Murder Suspect Slashed

A North Carolina judge has reduced the bond amount for a 19-year-old man charged with killing a Duke University graduate student last year.

Multiple media outlets report that Superior Court Judge Orlando F. Hudson on Tuesday reduced Stephen Oates' bond from $10 million to $1.5 million.

Oates is charged with murder and armed robbery in the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Abhijit Mahato. Originally from Tatangar, India, Mahato was studying computational mechanics at the private school in Durham.

Prosecutors said Oates and Laurence Lovette robbed Mahato at his home in January 2008 and shot him in the head. Lovette also faces
murder charges in the March 2008 death of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student body president Eve Carson.

This scum of the earth has taken 2 bright promising individuals from us whose full potential will never be known. Jail is too good form them. I hope they get the death penalty and are moved to the head of the line.

Ohh, just speed up the process and go head and release this violent murderer. That sounds as crazy as reducing his bond. But the sad thing is he will probably be released...bring back "hanging judges".

And what is the whole point in wasting the tax payers time and money to REDUCE a bond that was already set? Really, what is the point? Just another exercise in futility. What about some swift capital punishment for this garbage. We pay dearly every day yo haouse and feed them and it will go on for years as the lawyers keep the case puttering along for their monitary benefit.

Has anyone seen the new budget plans for DOC? Bonds, early releases, and freedom around the corner. Hey, NC the jokes on YOU. Bev signed it along with the legislators. If you have not scared, you need to be if you are not reading between the lines.

Race definitely plays a role in court decisions like these. This defendant shopped for the right judge, one who would be sympathetic and buys into all of the blather about society mistreating these clowns and forcing them to lash out. Orlando????

Murdered 2 people and a judge reduces his bond!!!!! What needs to be done is the parents of the murdered have the pleasure of being able to look this person in the eyes and give him some of his own medicine. If it were of my children that's what I'd love to do!!
