Off Duty Police Officer Charged In Connection With Woman's Death

An off duty police officer has now been charged in an accident that killed a community college employee.

Wilda Turner was killed in the June 1st crash on Highway 11, across from the Kinston Drag Strip.

Troopers have charged Michael Hoffman with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Troopers say Hoffman, who is a Pink Hill police officer, was driving his own pickup truck when it crossed the the center line and hit Turner's vehicle head-on.

There is no immediate word from Pink Hill officials whether the misdemeanor charge will have any impact on Hoffman's job as a police officer.

First of all it is not WITN that is making the law enforcement look bad they are only reporting the news it just so happens it is a officer involved in the accident, and it is very unfortunately that he has to be charged in what appears to be a complete accident. secondly, he was not charged the next day because you can't just charge ANYONE for a crime the next day without all the facts. I pray for all the families involved i know it must be very hard for him and his family as well as the others. people no matter what your job title is you are still human and no one is above making a mistake or having an accident

WITN loves to make law enforcement look bad whenever they can. This is a very unfortunate accident that happed when this guy was off duty. How many times have any of you dozed off behind the wheel or becomed distracted only to find yourself on the other side of the rode? This could have happened to any of us. I'm sure this guy feels terrible for what happened. God bless him, the victim and their families.

Also Sam, you have never met me, yet here you are commenting on ME. Is your life so boring that all you have to do is analyze other peoples comments?Comments that people have a Constitutional right to say.

Sam, all I said was that it took a month and a half before Hoffman was charged. Is this because he's a law enforcement officer? Anyone else is usually charged within a day or two.Why should law enforcement be shown special treatment.I respect law enforcement, but if they break the law, they should be treated just like every one else.

To Sam, my family and I have been very blessed to know Mr. Hoffman and his family. You are right, it is a blessing. To these people that want to leave their rude comments obviously you have nothing better to do!! This family has been through enough as well as the other families. And to all of you with with your rediculous comments, find yourselves a hobby and put yourselves in someone elses shoes for a minute!! You never know when you or someone you love may be in a similar situation. Oh and by the way, who are you people or anyone else to judge. That's not up to us and you weren't there and don't know what happened. Leave it alone. Enough is enough!!

Mr T, whats your excuse for Mr. hoffman? Is your life so boring that you go online and leave comments for people you dont know? I know Hoffman and his family and this has been very hard for all of them! Let them mend as a family and if you are ever blessed enough to meet them, then leave a comment.

Furthermore Sam, I will say this. The story says alcohol was involved. If she got drunk and fell off the golf cart, who's fault is that?

Cary: That was very nice of you; I'd say you just made my week. Thank you!

Mr T, i got a phone call earlier from a friend that told me to read a comment left about her cousin involving a golf cart, and of course you left another snide message that doesnt concern you,you are probably jobless, on welfare and drinking beer, get a life and leave people alone that you know nothing about.

Yo C? First, if you believe in your comment why hide your name? Are you afraid to back what you believe in? Tell me how Mr. Hoffman broke the law..he was not drinking and driving, speeding, talking on his phone or any of that, yes he had an accident, and I'm sure the memory of this accident is a bigger punishment than any court can give him. I pray that you never have an accident, and if you do I pray that more people like "C" are on your side instead of people like you.
