Teen Victimized By Fake MySpace Pages

It seems like just about everyone these days has a social networking page like Myspace. It's supposed to be a fun way to meet people, keep in touch with friends, or just a place to express who you are. But for one 15 year-old from the east, Myspace has become a nightmare.

Ashae Sykes of Dare County discovered someone had created a myspace page using her photos and names, even including sexually explicit figures on her face. The page talked about her family and said inappropriate things about her.

Sykes contacted the first person who posted the fake profile and it was removed. She was devastated when she saw the second one.

Sykes uncle Robert Flowers says he's concerned about the emotional impact. "I can't even imagine what she goes through and the way she handled it, she's been pretty strong because I would probably go crazy."

Dare County District Attorney Frank Parrish says he has dealt with similar cyber cases, but was unaware of this one. He says that detectives should be able to track where the page came from and then prosecute.

According to NC Attorney General Roy Cooper's office, there is a law that is meant to combat similar internet crimes. It states it is a misdemeanor to "Electronically mail or electronically communicate to another and to knowingly make any false statements concerning death, injury, indecent conduct of the person electronically mailed with the intent to abuse, annoy, terrify, threaten, harass, or embarrass."

Parrish says as a class 2 misdemeanor if convicted that person can face up to a $1,000 dollar fine and 60 days in jail.

So far there's been no such luck in Sykes case. She says she hopes that people become more aware of this growing problem and that in the future there's more protection for teenagers like her. "I just hope that someone can do something about it so it won't happen to anyone else"

There is a bill currently pending in the North Carolina General Assembly, Senate Bill 46, titled "Internet Libel," to further deal with such crimes. For more on that bill just click the related link below.

It's so sad that one person can be so Jealous over another as to want make such pages with peoples names, and photo's. Its a crime and it needs to stop. Its childish, and sick. Anyone who would do such a thing needs therapy. I have had people in my 35 years to aggervate me, divorce me and do all kinds of things to hurt me, but I would not ever post their picture up and do something such as this. Its a total shame something had to be like this.

you have to be 13, not 18, to get a MySpace account. Even 13 is too young, IMO.

A computer is not a babysitter. Kids need to be informed the internet is the internet. The internet should not be your kids only hobby. I don't understand. I do have it made though. I learn everyday from others mistakes. Thanks you!!!!!!

I am the mother of 3 young ladies and it should matter to any of us that this young lady picture was put out there for others to see in the wrong way! I know this young lady and she is a beautiful young lady! This young lady also has feelings and again we all should be concerned that she was treated this way! I hope whom ever went this far to publish such garbage is caught and dealt with by the LAW!

So CCC everytime you're at a family reunion or barbeque and someone snaps a picture you're divulging your life to the public? Those pictures could easily end up on someones facebook or myspace page.

CCC, not everyone on social networking sites are seeking "attention". I agree that you must be smart about what information you divulge to the public, but having a social networking site can be as simple as keeping in touch with friends and family that have moved away or even live down the road. My family is scattered from NC to California, we share pictures, information, etc. I do not have our profile open for the public to view and no indication that this girl did either. Regardless of the fact, this is basically the same as Identity theft. If you put your information out with the banks, creditor's, etc.. and someone steals your information they can do you harm. They took a chance as well! Does it make it right? You don't have to put your information out to the public in order to be a victim of Identity theft, school pictures, school functions, Cellphone cameras, digital cameras, etc all make it possible for someone to get all they need in order to duplicate your profile.

Just curious as to why there is no mention in the news story or in any of the comments that this TEEN should not have had a myspace page to start with. MYSPACE very clearly states that you are supposed to be 18 or older you shouldn't be able to hold MYSPACE accountable for people who are determined to utilize their services even though they aren't supposed to.
