Autopsy Shows Gunman Had Cocaine In System

An autopsy shows a man killed in an April shootout with Lenoir County deputies had cocaine in his system.

Doug Phillips was shot four times April 8th, according to the autopsy released today.

Also killed in that shooting was Deputy Allen Pearson, while Deputy Ryan Dawson was injured and just returned to work.

The medical examiner listed cocaine toxicity under other significant conditions in Phillips' death.

Deputies were called to Tick Bite after residents complained about a man shooting a gun in the woods. A special response team confronted Phillips, who authorities say shot Pearson and Dawson before being hit by return fire.

Authorities say prior to encountering Lenoir County deputies, Phillips killed his girlfriend in her Craven County home.
