A Wayne County man is accused using stolen checks from a neighbor to buy a vehicle, pay his electric bills and even register his vehicle with the DMV. That neighbor has been in prolonged medical care since last August.
Thomas Rice, Sr. is charged with forging some $24,000 in checks from the woman's bank account. Deputies say the Department of Social Services alerted them about the missing money.
Rice was arrested Monday on 28 counts each of forgery, uttering a forged instrument and obtaining property by false pretenses. Rice is in jail on a $100,000 secured bond.
