NC Mom Charged With Repeatedly Burning Daughter With Iron

Investigators have arrested a North Carolina mother they say repeatedly burned her daughter with an iron.

Authorities said Monday they have charged 33-year-old Nia Michelle Brooks of Fayetteville with aggravated assault on a handicapped person, felony child abuse and assault inflicting serious injury.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said Brooks burned her daughter with an iron on both her arms, her left thigh and her right leg.

The 11-year-old child told investigators that she was burned because she wasn't ironing her Easter dress the way her mother wanted.

A teacher reported the injuries after noticing scars. Investigators say the girl is mildly retarded, has no vision in her right eye and only a 30 percent field of vision in her left eye.

how about the mother's sentence being that she gets the same treatment everyday for the rest of her life!!! SICK SICK SICK!! Thanx for the observant teacher. Just one more thing to add to the list of their duties, child protective services !!

Another terrible act put onto an innocent child. I say lock the mother up and put her in population with the other criminals. One thing about prisoners, they cannot stand a child abuser.

That is pathetic for a parent to do that to their own kid. This mother should be sentenced to capital punishment for this act. This girl not only was handicapped, but also was forced to iron the dress. If the mother had such a problem with it, then she should have done it on her own. It sounds like this woman is lazy, mean, evil, and should be burnt herself. I am that kind of guy that does not hit a woman, but this is one of the very few exceptions. If my wife did that to my daughter or son(which we don't have kids yet) then I would have thrown punches right to her until she stopped that horrible act.

I just don't understand how people can treat innocent children this way. It makes me sick to my stomach!

This individual does not suffer from mental illness unless you consider evilness as such. She hurt her own innocent child, she was suppose to protect her from people that would harm her. I wonder if this will ultimately be another case of "family preservation at all cost" according to Child Protective Services. Lets see, the abusive parent attends "classes" and upon completion the child is returned to them. Only to become a smarter repeat offender. Who knows what else she has done to this child. I lack faith in our judicial system which seems to favor criminals over victims. Each person involved should do what the mother has not, protect this little girl at all cost. The courts may not hold the mother accountable for her actions, but the final judgement will come to all and she will be judged accordingly.

There are so many women who would give anything to be able to have a child and can not but here we have someone who has a special needs child and would burn this child. Someone should put her in a chair and burn her over and over again. I hope and pray this child is taken away from this women and put with someone who would love and care for her.

I don't think there is any comment to this story that most people haven't thought of already. It is truly unbelievable how cruel some people can be. I pray that this woman will be punished to the fullest extent of the law. I know how frustrating parenting a mildly retarded child is from first hand experience but never would I think of doing something like that to my sweet little girl. The mother should have been praising the child for being able to iron her own clothes instead of punishing her for not doing it right. I wouldn't trust my typical 10 yr old with an iron much less my handicapped one. My heart breaks for that little girl. She was put here on this earth like she is for a purpose and I hope one day she realizes that. As for the mother I cannot sympathize with her at all. She should not have the honor of being called a mother.
