A man serving a life sentence for first degree sexual offense and kidnapping was killed Monday morning after he was backed over by a tractor.
It happened just before 8:00 a.m. at the Caledonia Prison Farm in Tillery, that's in Halifax County.
The Department of Correction says Woody Chavis was airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital where he died at 11:15 a.m.
Authorities say Chavis and another inmate were trying to hitch a trailer onto a farm tractor when he was accidentally run over.
The Halifax County Sheriff's Office is reviewing the death, but no foul play is suspected.
Chavis was convicted in 1986 from Robeson County.
