Prison Inmate Killed By Farm Tractor

A man serving a life sentence for first degree sexual offense and kidnapping was killed Monday morning after he was backed over by a tractor.

It happened just before 8:00 a.m. at the Caledonia Prison Farm in Tillery, that's in Halifax County.

The Department of Correction says Woody Chavis was airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital where he died at 11:15 a.m.

Authorities say Chavis and another inmate were trying to hitch a trailer onto a farm tractor when he was accidentally run over.

The Halifax County Sheriff's Office is reviewing the death, but no foul play is suspected.

Chavis was convicted in 1986 from Robeson County.

My grandfather was a cheif of Police & a long time Deputy Sherriff, I to believe in carma; the man died due to an accident while in prison due to an ACCIDENT! not to mention he served 20 some odd years. We let people like him out and back into sociaty every day. NO one should have to die because of ignorant accidents. P.s. on the law books for N.C. you can still be hung for stealing a Horse.

He was serving a life sentence because he tied a 5 year old little girl to a tree and RAPED her. This happened in the early to middle 80's. He done this because he was mad at her mother for breaking up with him. Check it out. His crime version is PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE. I have access to it because of where I work. Point being. He should of been hung back then instead of being allowed to breath another breath. He has been relaxing in the joint for the last 23 years or so getting free medical care and three meals a day with no work to amount to anything. Just so you know the inmates do VERY LITTLE work at the "farm" - Caledonia. This work is a joke. Good riddens. Society is better as a whole with this freak gone.

Just think a little over 100 years ago if you just stole a horse. You had a date with the hangman. Now if you are a sexual pervert & a kidnapper. You get 3 free meals a day, good housing, you can work and get paid and for credit for time off your sentence. Maybe the tractor driver should have had his emergency break on? My condolances to the familly.

I'm not Sam, but I understand what he's trying to say. If this guy hadn't committed his crime, he wouldn't have been in prison for this accident to have happened. What was so hard about that comment, Anonymous?
