Guilty Plea In Homeless Murder

There's been another guilty plea in the death of a homeless man who was beaten and then gutted with a broken beer bottle last summer.

Dustin Newcome pleaded guilty to 2nd degree murder. The 22-year-old was sentenced to 24-29 years in prison.

Mike Kozak was beaten over the head with a pipe and tree limb, and then gutted with a broken beer bottle at at homeless camp in Jacksonville.

The court recommends psychiatric treatment and counseling for Newcome. He also agreed to testify against the remaining defendant, Jason Blackmon.

In February Jay Oldaker pleaded guilty in return for his testimony. He is still awaiting sentencing.

Lisa Williams, Kozak's sister told the judge "only someone evil could do this. I hope the men who did this get help."

With the two co-defendants now agreeing to testify, Blackmon will appear in court in two weeks. "Mike Kozak never treated another human being with a breath of contempt. I just want them to turn the evil around, I just want them locked up," Williams told the judge.

Tina, there are 2 different Sharon's posting here. You seem to be having a hard time accepting that your cousin committed this crime, I understand. We can't believe anyone could gut another human with a broken beer bottle either. It doesn't matter if none of his other crimes were violent or not, THIS CRIME is was violent. He admitted to the crime and gave the sickening details, get a grip.

Sharon, As I said Dusty is my cousin. Yes I know he has been in alot of trouble but if u looked at his record then u saw that none of his crimes were violent! And yes, because he is my cousin I WILL defend him tooth and nail! Like I said before, if you grew up with Dusty you would know that he isn't a murderer!

If you check with the n.c. corection you will see that dusty has been in trouble at least 18 time. and all he ever got was probation. from stealing to drugs If the state of n.c. was harder on him maybe mr kozac would still be alive

Well it looks like Dusty Boy, Jay, and Jason are sure not going to be laughing about that anymore. That was just straight cruel what they did to a homeless man. Also, I wonder, if the sister Lisa is testifying that much for him, why did she not let him have shelter at her house. That is what family is for. I may be wrong about this, but it sounds like to me that she was not much of a family member for letting him stay at her house and get back on his feet to begin with. If it was me that had a family member that lost everything, I would go out of my way to make sure one of my own does not go through all kinds of mess. Now what is going to happen to the Blackmon dude?
