Man Headed To Prison For Raping Child

A man is headed to prison for decades for raping a child.

Keith Smith, of Spruce Street in Williamston, was sentenced Thursday to a minimum of 61 years and a maximum of 76 years behind bars.

A Martin County jury convicted smith on seven counts, including the rape of a 15 year old and other sex-related charges.

The victim was 15 when the abuse started in September 2005. Smith was 42.

The abuse ended more than a year later, in November 2006. The victim reported the crimes to her mother in January 2008.

Hey yes, her child support was court ordered THROUGH social services. Social services garnished his wages for 500 a month and send to the mother. How is this a crime and lying to social servixes Lol? Besides, the evidence in court was devastating, why would you sign a confession if you were innocent?? thats just stupid.

I have known this man most of my life and when I heard this I couldn't believe it, it had to be a mistake. I was in court all 4 days and as the evidence was presented, I began to doubt this man I knew. A confession... who would sign a confession if they were not guilty? It was so clear he lied on the stand, I was heartbroken. To think a guy I knew so long could do this, makes me lose faith in people. I feel justice was served and hope the child can recover.

Yes i do believe that this man is innocent. i do think that this woman lied as did her daughter. someone needs to report her to columbia social services about all the years that this man paid her 500.00 dollars a month and when asked by social services if she was receiving child support she said no. what about this felony ? i would bet there are other things she has lied about, including her daughter.i guess they didn't need him anymore.

Sick, sick man. I can only feel for this child that this happened to. The punishment is not nearly what he deserves. Good job WPD, justice was served.

That is right, everyday there is some new sex crime in the news. And of course they are all not guilty. Give me a break. Just like that teacher that turned himself in now says he didn't do it. REALLY?

law enforcement is under no obligation to be 100% honest to a rapist DURING AN INTERROGATION! That is a common technique accepted by the supreme court designed to get the truth out of a criminal. Great work WPD!

He actually PASSED the polygraph but law enforcement officers later LIED to him & told him he failed. Is that right? Yes, Mr. Smith wrote SEVERAL pages confessing & then signed. No, he should not get away with what happened, but should law enforcement officers get away with lying to get his confession?

To those to whom think this man is innocent, you do not know the facts of the case nor did you pay attention in court. I knew this man and in the beginning never would have believed he committed these horrific acts; however,in the end the truth came out. If he were innocent then why would you confess (full written and signed statement, I might add)after being told you failed the polygraph. If I knew I was innocent in a matter, but told I failed the polygraph examination then I would not confess based on those findings. Thats completely absurd. The fact of the matter is this man broke the law and now has to pay for his crimes. He knew he was guilty in this matter and should have taken the original plea offered to him prior to trial, rather than waste our courts time. If you still believe hes innocent, how bout ask so many of the character witnesses, his defense called to court, just what their thoughts are now. I happen to know a few, if not all, definitely had a different opinion.
