Man Convicted And Sentenced For Raping Child

A man is headed to prison for decades for raping a child.

Keith Smith, of Spruce Street in Williamston, was sentenced Thursday to a minimum of 61 years and a maximum of 76 years behind bars.

A Martin County jury convicted Smith on seven counts, including rape of a 15-year-old and other sex-related charges.

Between September 2005 and November 2006, Smith "engaged in numerous and various sexual acts with the victim at several locations in Williamston," reported a press release.

The victim was 15 when the abuse started. Smith was 42.

In January 2008, the victim reported the crimes to her mother. An investigation began, and police say Smith confessed. Testimony revealed the sexual abuse happened in Martin, Tyrrell and Beaufort counties.

"I have nothing but the highest praise for the law enforcement officers who investigated this case, the jurors who diligently listened to nearly a week's worth of evidence, and especially the victim for her strength in coming forward to report these horrific crimes," said assistant district attorney Lisa Coltrain, who prosecuted Smith.

Instead of being judgemental, you need to pray for this young girl and the gentlemen who was charged. And pray for the truth to be revealed, and leave it in the hands of God Almighty, because he knows what happened! And pray for both families!

Angry, you must not have been in court. Both sides were heard, he even took the stand. As far as things about the mother and daughter, character traits have no basis on criminal cases like this. That is why he could not have 25 character witnesses saying what a great and kind person he was.

the public and jury convicted this man without hearing only one side. this 19 year old and her mother lied and small minded people believed them. if only the lawyers for smith could have been able to tell what is known about this mother and her daughter all of you would be ashamed of yourselves. be thankful that it wasn't any of you, because the guilty parties were allowed to walk away.

My heart goes out to the victim. But why did it happen in 3 different Counties before he got reported? and I agree with "disgusted", they should remove that body part because he'll still be able to satisfy himself in prison when the lights go out! And you have all these crack addicts giving it away for a few dollars, but he rather RAPE A CHILD!

I've known this guy for years. It never crossed my mind that he was capable of this cruelty. I hope that he rots in prison!

One word for people like this. SICK... I hope the victim can recover from this. As for the rapist, you did not get nearly what you deserved.
