Police Chief Has Accident While Checking Blackberry

The police chief of the south Seattle suburb of Federal Way has issued a public apology for a minor traffic accident that happened while he was checking his BlackBerry in his unmarked police car.

The city summed it up Thursday in a news release that began "Federal Way Police Chief Brian Wilson is mortified."

Apparently Wilson stopped for a red light on March 18 and glanced down at his BlackBerry to view newspaper headlines and e-mails. He then took his foot off the brake and collided with the car in front of him.

The Seattle Times reports no one was injured and the cars weren't damaged.

Still, City Manager Neal Beets gave Wilson a verbal reprimand. The police chief says he takes full responsibility.

I saw a woman driving in lunch hour traffic on G-ville Blvd. while texting. she never looked over at me as I rode beside her. It is a true wonder how some people even live to see the next day. It never ceases to amaze me how many people are willing to give up their life just so they can send a text to their friends or to check the news. Next time just look up funeral homes that way if you survive the crash but kill the car load of kids travelling the opposite direction you can atleast give them some good advice on where to look.

If even a police chief illustrates that one cannot operate a vehicle and text, here's your sign. If I was him, I'd have been horrified to admit I was checking news headlines and email. At least it could have been that he was checking something important. He can read about himself in the headlines now.

I guess this means we should practice what we preach. Thankfully, it was a minor accident.
