Capt. Janice Rogers told The News & Record of Greensboro on Friday that Kalli Martin showed other signs of physical abuse but would not elaborate.
On Wednesday, 38-year-old Tonya Dobson Williams and her fiance, 37-year-old Anthony Ravon Duncan, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder. They are being held without bail.
Police say Kalli wasn't breathing on March 18 when she was taken to a hospital where she died.
Six children were in the home at the time. Williams' mother said her daughter was a good mother to the children and that she took in Kalli and two siblings when their mother went to prison.
