NEW INFORMATION: Police Say Bank Embezzler Targeted Elderly

Beaufort, NC - A former bank employee is accused of pocketing over $100,000 dollars from customers' accounts.

Donna Cayton worked for the BB&T branch in Beaufort.

Beaufort police say Cayton is now charged with felony embezzlement. Police say the woman stole $111,075.99 from the bank during a five year period.

Police say the woman targeted the elderly and accounts with large amounts of money in them.

They say there are 30 different victims, some which had money taken out multiple times.

Police say Cayton would take the money out in about $500 increments, and then then customers would come to the bank with problems it was Cayton who actually handled it. Police tell us Cayton would fix the problem by taking money out of someone else's account to "hush them up".

When Cayton was fired from the bank, police say she surrendered over $60,000 from her retirement plan and still owes the bank $50,000.

She turned herself in Monday and posted a $10,000 bond. Initial information provided to WITN said her bond was $1,000.

This is the second BB&T employee to be charged with embezzlement within the past two months here in Eastern Carolina.

In January, a teller at a Greenville branch was arrested after police say she took $23,000 from a relatives account without permission.
