911 Call Released In Fatal Onslow Shooting

WITN has obtained the 911 call made before an Onslow County Sheriff's Deputy shot and killed a man Wednesday.

Deputies arrived at the home of John Traub on Jeffrey road Wednesday morning.

Neighbors say they noticed Traub waving a gun in front of the window when deputies arrived.

A person who identified herself as a friend of Traub's called 911. "He told us and his sponsor that he's been thinking about drinking and just shooting himself. He called me said that he just wanted to see if I'd answer the telephone. He just kept saying I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, and I said what's going on, and he said, he started crying worse and I could barely understand him, and he said just please try to help my daughter, if you can, and then he said bye and he hung up."

The dispatcher responded by saying she was going to try to get Traub on the phone.

Thank GOD & everything holy that that those of you passing judgement are perfect. Do you know what it feels like to lose all of your immediate family in a span of 7 years? Do you know what it feels like to have to comfort the survivors,& live with the guilt that your comfort does nothing to ease the pain? Thank God ignorance is the exception, not the rule. No matter the circumstances, "he".. John Peter Traub.. was a father, brother, uncle, nephew, lover..and the list goes on. He may have been nobody to you, but right, wrong or indifferent John Traub was family to us. Sleep well with the judgement you pass on him and everyone else. Have you never heard the saying...people in glass houses.......I think you can finish it

coming from john traubs daughter: there are many alternatives other then shooting and killing someone (rubber bullets, gas, talking) my father told the officers to get off his property and they did not. he had been sober for 9 years until that day. he was a good man and had a huge heart. im left not knowing who killed him n that hurts so much i still cry over him. im only 17 years old and i needed my father and still do and tonite i really wish he was here. on the other hand, its a good thing they didnt release the officers name because i would have taken justice into my own hands. that officer didnt just kill a man he killed my father!

i just don't understand why John Traub only had 1 bullet in the gun except for the fact he did plan to use it on himself and noone else i think the situation could have been handled differently i don't believe for a minute he meant to harm anyone I know for a fact that John Traub was a stubborn man that just didn't want anyone, especially law enforcement on his property and was just trying to make a point unfortunetly whoever the officer was acted to quickly this could have been a totally different outcome and it's a shame

If he waved a gun at law enforcement, he would wave one at anyone. I have children in the area. Now it's a safer place.

sad, sad story. sounds like he was having problems and the only way out to him was going to be suicide by a cop.
