School Bus Driver Charged With DWI After Wreck

A school bus driver has been charged with driving while impaired after a wreck that sent four students to a hospital.

Mint Hill Police Department Lt. John Rowell said Tuesday that 32-year-old Desiree Kelly of Charlotte has been charged with DWI and reckless driving. He said the DWI stems from prescription drugs, not alcohol, and that an officer on the scene noticed that Kelly was having trouble staying awake.

Kelly has been taken to the county jail. School system spokeswoman Kathleen Johansen said she has been suspended with pay pending the results of the investigation.

The bus was carrying 15 students when it hit a brick mailbox and crashed into a ditch Tuesday morning on its way to Independence High School. Johansen said the students' injuries were not life-threatening.

Have you ever tried to follow a charter bus on the interstate? Better have lots of horsepower. They never run close to the posted speed limit.

You are subject to both drug and alcohol test during any giving time.Apparently this was not the case.I did a back up for a driver that was so impaired by being drunk.I took her home and she never drove again. For one time in my life with precious cargo, she refused to drive.THANK GOD for ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They need to send her to jail. This could have been more serious than it was. I have always wanted to drive a bus but because I am on medication for diabetes I am not allowed to. This driver knew the rules and if I was a parent of one of those kids I would be getting her for child endanderment.
