DEPUTIES: Bootleg Cigarettes Found After Traffic Stop

Trash bags full of cigarettes were found and two men are in jail, accused of transporting bootleg cigarettes.

It all happened after a deputy stopped a speeding car in Halifax County.

The stop was made this morning on Highway 158. A search of the vehicle found $1280 in cash sticking out from behind the glove compartment and the bootleg smokes in trash bags in the pickup truck's bed.

Robert Pule, who is from Ecuador, and Jacques Dupont of New York were both charged with possession and transportation of non tax paid cigarettes. The two are in the Halifax County jail on $100,000 bonds.

If they were using counterfeit coins to buy gas, it would seem they would have been charged with passing counterfeit money or theft of gasoline. If I remember correctly, taking a certain quantity of cigarettes (more than 5-6 cartons?)across state lines for resale is unlawful. They did have a large quantity I understand. Seems they're ethnicity is a deciding factor here.

Retired Marine, it is definately not intended to be a race thing, but usually when you hear about cases like this, with somebody that resides in a South American Country and the other guy, who could have been raised in America, them together doing this, there is no good to it at all. If it's one thign I have a major problem with, it's Illegal Immigration, which is one of many factors that has contributed to why this economy is so horrible and why there is so much danger around, which I do know it's worse over in the Middle East, but still letting them stay in the United States creates a lose-lose situation for this nation. Also, I have family that lives up in Roanoke Rapids, which is in Halifax County, and I would want those two creeps nowhere near them. If the government does as I would do, we all would be safer.

The real story is: These guys had counterfeit coins with the value of 1/10 of a cent. They were using them to pay for gas. Since there is no such coin value, Cigarette smuggling is the only charge that the law could come up with. If they had a whole tobacco plant in their possession, the entire military forces would have been brought back from Iraq and Afghanistan, to intercept these hardened criminals. What a waste of effort, words and time.

I agree with MAN, WTH, also if they are illegal then send them home after they pay fines and or jail. Sam I see were you are coming from, but you make it seem as a race thing. Sex with a student gets you a seat on Dr. Phil or Opera.

If I was the federal government, I would sentence them back to Ecuador and to never step foot in the United States again or they will receive the death penalty. They are sure busted this time. They need to stay away from the United States.

Did they steal them, buy them? How did they come to possess them? If they were purchased, is that still non-tax paid?

Let us see: Treasury Secretary Geithner received 0 time for tax evasion. Former Congressman Daschel received 0 time for tax evasion. Bernie Madov-with-your-money is in your Manhatten apartment(it's your's because your money paid for it) and these tremendously dangerous men armed with cigarettes are in jail. Yea, sweet insane justice.
