Police: Rape Suspect Fails In Hospital Escape Attempt

Police say a rape suspect tried to escape, only to be caught when he fell through ceiling tiles in the hospital emergency room.

Charged with second degree rape and attempted escape from custody is Mariah Snook of Beaufort.

Beaufort police say Snook is a relative of the victim and the rape happened at her mother's home. Police were alerted to the rape after the victim went to the hospital. They then went to the home and say they found Snook hiding under insulation in the attic.

After getting a search warrant, investigators took Snook to Carteret General Hospital to collect evidence from his body.

While dressing they say Snook climbed into the ceiling and tried to escape. He was caught when police say he fell through the ceiling tiles onto the floor of the room next door.

Snook is in the Carteret County jail on $250,000 bond.
