Wilmington Children Left In Cold Car; Mother Charged

Police say a mother in Wilmington left her two young children in the car late Wednesday night without any heat.

Amy Smith is charged with misdemeanor child abuse after officers found her 3 month old and 4 year old children in her car. A security guard at the Motel 6 called authorities, then took the children to the motel office. The children were transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and later taken into Department of Social Services custody.

The National Weather Service says at the time it was 24 degrees in Wilmington.

Wilmington police say the mother was eventually found walking near the motel on Market Street. Smith is currently in the New Hanover County jail under a $1200 bond.

How you could defend a person like this is disturbing....I hope you don't treat your kids this way (if you have any) and think that it is ok...If so I hope someone steps in to help them!

I don't see what the big deal is here. So what if she left her kids in the car for a while? It wasn't THAT cold outside, and certainly wasn't too cold in the car. Anyone from a cold area knows that if you leave a bottle of water in a car it won't freeze overnight until the temperature gets below 15F or so. I don't see where the kids were in any danger. Besides, THEY BELONG TO THE MOTHER and she has the right to treat them as she pleases, so long as she's not injuring them or killing them! I don't think kids are VERY TOUGH any more. It would do them good to get a little cold once in a while, if you ask me. Kids need to be TOUGHER, because so many are WIMPY and WEAK nowadays. Y'all need to get off this mother's case. She didn't do anything to you, and she didn't do anything to those kids. IT'S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS WHAT SHE DOES ANYWAY! All a bunch of hoopla over nothing important! Grow up, people. Those kids ARE JUST FINE, and will be. You know she loves them in her heart. ENOUGH SAID!

To Momof3, I see what you are saying, either one of these things could be the case, and with the economy and the way it is, that is not good for the United States and is especially bad for these innocent children. Do not be suprised to see more abuse, neglect, and kidnapping of children occur every year that passes by. It is a scary situation.

David don't be mad at Angelina just because she is doing good. Its a nightmare to go through adoption in the states so Im sure none of us can judge her as long as people are adopting kids that need it.

Anyone STUPID enough to leave children in a car in that kind of weather should have them permanently taken away from them. Call Angalina Jolie and tell her she no longer has to go to africa to adopt children , there are thousands of kids in America that need homes .

It really saddens me to see children caught in the crossfire of drugs, alcohol, and relationships gone wrong. This happens much more than U think. I am appalled when I go shopping of the number of kids left in cars period. ANYTHING could happen to them in a split second! Isn't there anything or anyone who can help this lady get her life changed around? Who knows what those of you who want to slaughter her would have done had you been her. Yes, the kids need to be in a safe environment and what she did was so WRONG, but ths woman definately need some help. When did we as a nation decide people were "disposable" ? I hope those of you sitting in you ivory towers condeming her don't have your walls come tumbling doen around you. We are all but an eye blink away from her situation should we allow ourselves to walk down the wrong path. This lady needs help in the worst way. I am so glad those poor babies are safe.

The DSS will give them back to her. They & judgesare very bias towards the "mothers." Its hard to get them to do anything. I bet they already had an open case against her or someone tried to tell them something. I've seen it first hand in Pitt County. The mother can have a list of charges against her, and they side with her. I watched one woman tell a female judge here in Pitt County, your honor i have mental problems and who did she side with? The mother over the father who had full time employment. Through all of that i never heard them say anyone had referred the child for counseling, etc to find out what was going on. No mention of what the child's teacher had to say. It was like a soap opera being played out in court. What i saw was more about protecting the mother's rights than the child. It made me nauseous and determined that i'd never vote for this particular judge. Many times the children in these cases become the ticket to medicaid and food stamps.

That woman should stay in prison. She should never get her kids back or the right to be a parent. There are some sick people in this world and it is sad that there are some people who would be good parents that don't get the chance to have any kids, when people who do have kids leave them. THERE'S A SICK WORLD OUR THERE!!!! Those two children are in my prayers.
