UPDATE: Marine Accused Of Beating Pregnant Wife

Lawmen say the woman beaten with a hammer by her Marine husband in Jacksonville this weekend is in the early stages of pregnancy.

Lawmen arrested Jonathan Gould of Pinewood Drive in Jacksonville. Officials say Gould is a Marine Lance Corporal at Camp Lejeune.

Gould had his first court appearance Monday morning. His bond was set at one million dollars. His next court appearance is set for January 15.

Deputies say Gould had called them early Saturday morning and told them he had been attacked at his home when he got off work from his second job. Gould said he had been beaten unconscious and when he woke up, he noticed his wife, 26-year-old Erin Gould, had been severally beaten and injured.

Both were taken to the hospital. After investigators conducted interviews, they say Gould's story didn't match the physical evidence they collected.

They say Gould later confessed to the beating. Sheriff Ed Brown says Gould told them he walked in the door, grabbed a hammer and beat his wife, who was lying on the couch. The sheriff said Gould locked up the couple's dog, which is normally by the wife's side.

The Sheriff says Erin was struck at least three times, blows so hard they fractured her skull. Brown said she is listed in stable condition in the hospital, but she is not responsive. He said there is no sign she has lost the baby.

Sheriff Brown said Jonatham Gould had self-inflicted stab wounds from a paring knife from his own kitchen to back up his original story. The sheriff said the Marine had superficial cuts on his legs, ear and chest.

Sheriff Brown said the two had an argument last week and had discussed separation and divorce.

Here is the initial press release given to us Saturday by the Sheriff's Office:

At 4:17am this morning, Onslow County deputies were dispatched to a residence on Pinewood Drive in Jacksonville, NC. The caller, Jonathan Gould (24 yr old w/m) told deputies that someone had assaulted him when he was entering his home after returning from a late night job. Gould said that he was injured and left unconscious. When he awoke, he discovered that his wife had been severely attacked and injured.

EMS transported Gould and his wife to the hospital.

Onslow County Crime Scene Investigators began to process the residence. Investigators began to conduct interviews and to gather information.

Investigators determined that the physical evidence at the scene did not match what they had been told by Jonathan Gould.

Gould was treated and released and asked to travel to the Sheriff's Office.

Gould's wife had to be airlifted due to life-threatening head injuries.

Throughout the day, investigators continued to conduct interviews and Crime Scene Investigators continued to collect evidence and to process the evidence.

Later in the afternoon, Gould was confronted with the results of the investigation and the fact that his explanation did not match the crime scene. Gould confessed to attacking his wife and to causing her severe head trauma.

Gould was arrested and was booked into the Jail on a charge of 1st Degree Attempted Murder. Gould is being held on NO bond. He will have a first appearance on Monday morning.

The victim is in Critical Condition at a hospital in Wilmington, NC.
