Doctor Accused Of Hastening Death For Organ Harvest Acquitted

A transplant surgeon who was accused of hastening a comatose man's death so his organs could be harvested has been acquitted of an abuse charge.

The California jury on Thursday found Dr. Hootan Roozrokh not guilty.

The 34-year-old faced up to four years in prison if convicted of abuse of a dependent adult.

The case was believed to be the first of its kind against a transplant doctor in the United States. In March, a judge dismissed two other felony counts against Roozrokh.

Roozrokh was accused of prescribing too much medication to Ruben Navarro, who was in his mid-20s when he died at a hospital in 2006.

He was in a coma after suffering a heart attack and also had a neurological disease.

His kidneys and liver were never harvested.
