Illinois Governor Arrested On Federal Charges

Federal authorities in Chicago have arrested Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, and they've accused him of attempting to benefit financially from his position to appoint Barack Obama's Senate replacement.

U.S. Attorney's office spokesman Randall Samborn says both Blagojevich and his chief of staff John Harris were arrested Tuesday.

Authorities say they've also accused Blagojevich of threatening to withhold state assistance to the Tribune Co. in connection with the sale of Wrigley Field to induce the firing of editorial board members who have been critical of the governor.

A federal official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press that the allegations include that the governor took money from at least one individual in connection with naming a successor for the U.S. Senate seat that was vacated by Obama. The official declined to be named publicly because the investigation was still under way.

Blagojevich is charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery.

Federal agents are in Blagojevich's office in the Thompson Center in downtown Chicago.

The governor has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

"???", in your dreams. I think that there should be a special election for the people to decide who will represent them. Or since it's Obama's seat, he should choose his successor. Who can better find someone to replace a person than that person him/herself? It seems logical to me. You have to take your emotions out and be willing to reason when thinking about issues such as these. You may not want another liberal senator, but you have to realize that the people living in the mentioned area are liberal and want liberal representation. You also have to be empathetic. Imagine yourself in their shoes. Would you just want anyone appointing someone to represent you? I think once you have honestly evaluated all of these matters, you will come to the same, or at least a similar, conclusion that I have.

Be interesting to see if the almighty Governor gets his sentence commuted by Obama. After all, Obama knows nothing about it.

Actually I think that in this situation, since the governor now cannot appoint someone to fill the senate seat, that the President at the time the seat became vacant( George W. Bush) should be the one to appoint someone to take it.

"Devil Dog", I must applaud you because you're one of the only ones who can seem to get my screen name right. Some of you need to be hopeful that Obama, his administration, and Congress can successfully pass legislation to make certain that every American has health insurance so that you can go get your vision checked. It is B-L-O-G [take a breath] R-E-F-U-T-E-R; BLOG REFUTER. There is no 'L' in refuter. Think back to its root word, refute. Refute means to overthrow by argument, evidence, or proof. It's not rocket science. By the way, the Illinois Governor was not an ally of Obama. If you had done your research, you would know this. "Tad", I won't even comment on your post [uhm-hmm, honest child molesters; woo, excuse me]. "XXX", you have no idea if we will get what we want. Do you know why? You, in no way, know what each Obama supporter wants or wanted. : )
