Four people in the East are accused of staging phony car crashes, then collecting tens of thousands of dollars in insurance money.
The North Carolina Insurance Commissioner says the following have been arrested: Rayon Lamon Artis,32, of 1000 W. 4th St., Greenville; Arturo Leon Carmen, 29, 3900 Woodcrest Dr., Ayden; Jermaine Keys, 1100 W. 4th St., Greenville; and Shawana Latrece Smith, 26, 500 Verdant Dr., Greenville.
The report says Pitt County Memorial Hospital Police assisted with the arrest of Jermaine Keys.
Insurance officials say Rayon Artis was the fraud ringleader, conspiring with the others to stage auto accidents and then submitting phony claims. The Insurance Commissioner says this scam has netted more than $100,000. More arrests are expected.
